DEVELOPMENT - Phase 3 Project Taunton

Goodland Gardens

museum-north-entrance.jpg

Goodland Gardens is the largest public space in Taunton’s town centre. Centrally located between the river and the Grade I listed Mediaeval Castle, it has enormous potential but, in part, is in very poor repair. The Gardens link Coal Orchard, Bridge/North Streets, Castle Green and Tangier.

Project Taunton is working with landscape architect Steve Swan, Swan Paul Partnership and structure engineer Andy Phillips, Phillips Consulting, to design:

  • an improved and widened walkway adjoining Somerset Square, along the river to the Town Bridge
  • the removal of bridge panels and creation of raised accessible walkway to the area between Debenhams and the river
  • new riverside railings on top of stone wall
  • re-landscaping of existing paved area to include skateboard friendly, terraced seating/steps
  • replacement footbridge over the Mill Stream
  • new lighting, benches and other furniture

A planning application is due to to be submited at the beginning of 2011 and Growth Points funding has been allocated to deliver the scheme.
