The River Tone springs to life in the Brendon Hills eventually joining the River Parrett in Burowbridge. The only remaining navigable section of the river is through Taunton town centre and Project Taunton plans to maximise the waterway's potential by improving or creating paths and spaces in the vicinity; providing a well thought through set of signs and interpretation and generally supporting water recreation and events.
At Firepool the River Tone joins the Bridgwater and Taunton Canal which runs a 12 mile course through delightful countryside to Taunton's neighbouring town Bridgwater. Somerset Waterways Development Trust has permission to remove silt which is at present clogging the channel from Firepool Lock into the river. Once this has been achieved (expected Spring 2011) boats will be able to navigate their way through the town via Somerset Square to French Weir.
