DEVELOPMENT - Phase 3 Project Taunton

Somerset Square - New Children’s Play Sculpture

Children_playing_on_Kingfishers_Nest

Thursday (19 May) saw the completion of a brand new children’s play sculpture at Somerset Square.  Inspired by a kingfisher’s nest, found on the banks of the River Tone, it has been designed by Taunton landscape architect Louise Baugh of Swan Paul Partnership and crafted by local artists Chris Webb and Tom Raffield.

The kingfisher's nest is the final piece in the Somerset Square jigsaw and fits perfectly in the space, just a stone’s throw from the River Tone and The Brewhouse.

The play sculpture comprises three oversized Portland Stone eggs crafted by local artist Chris Webb of Staple Fitzpaine, surrounded by a steamed, bent oak nest created by Tom Raffield, a former student at Somerset College.

The play sculpture is already proving popular with local children who took the opportunity after school on Thursday to try it out for the first time.

The transformation of a former car park into Somerset Square, a newly landscaped public space, including this spectacular new addition, has been funded by Pegasus, the developers responsible for Pegasus Court at Somerset County Cricket Ground.

Ian Franklin of Project Taunton said: “This fabulous new piece of public art not only acts as a centrepiece for Somerset Square, it provides a wonderfully unique play feature for children and we hope they have hours of fun playing on it.  The addition of the kingfishers nest marks the completion of Somerset Square – an accessible, well used public space and just one element of our 50 hectare regeneration in Taunton’s town centre.”
